Hospital update

Kaitlyn is doing well today. Other than elevated liver enzymes in her blood and a Staph infection, you would never know there was anything wrong with her. Now that she is off the steroids, she is acting more like herself every day. Dr. Keuker spoke to us today and informed us that she does have Hepatitis, but not the "Hepatitis" disease. Basically, she has an inflamed liver that should go away when the infection clears up. Then the Infectious Disease doctor came in and said that he thinks her liver enzymes are elevated because of the chemo that she received last Thursday. SO, since there is no test to determine if it is from the chemo, they have to run a slew of other tests to rule out other possible liver diseases. Since she has tested positive for the Staph bacteria, they are putting her on a 14 day regimen of antibiotics. She cannot start the next phase of her chemo treatment until the Staph bacteria is "inactive" or until her blood cultures come back negative. They took more blood today and it will be 48 hours before we know the results of those. If they don't grow the Staph bacteria, She will be able to begin her next round of treatment either Wed or Thursday.

So, there are still a lot of questions about why her liver enzymes are elevated, but her doctors are doing everything they can right now to determine the source. But, she hasn't had a fever since Friday night, so they think the antibiotics are doing their job.
