Just as we were about to pop open some champagne to celebrate last night, we noticed that Kaitlyn felt a bit hot. We took her temperature about 8pm and it was about 100 degrees. The rule of thumb is to call the doctor when the temp reaches 101 degrees or above. We took her temp every hour and it finally reached 101 at about 10pm. We called the doctor and he said to bring her to the ER.
SIGH...How could it be? After receiving such great news, how is it that we are heading into the hospital with a fever? We got into the ER and they did the normal blood workup, took her temperature 3 times, gave her some antibiotics and made her pee in a cup - that was a true chore - but after an hour, she finally did it. I was never so proud to see someone pee in a cup! After 4 hours and no documented temp in the hospital, they decided to send us home.
The only thing of concern to us is that her bloodwork came back and she is neutropenic again. Within a day, her counts dropped from 5,600 to 350, under 500 is considered neutropenic. They told us that it could be because of the intrathecal chemo treatment she received on Thursday (10/2). I know the chemo can lower her counts, but that much in a day??? The on-call oncologist that sent us home last night is supposed to call this morning to follow-up and we will discuss it with him.
Yet another reality check...she is not out of the woods yet, nowhere close.
