What a day...

First, let me say that Kaitlyn's Methotrexate (MTX) level came back last night at .06 micromoles which was better than what they were hoping for. So, Kaitlyn is now off the Lecovorin Rescue. There are still small levels of Methotrexate in her body, but it is no longer at a toxic level. So, that behind us, the doctors turned their focus to the line infection that is making Kaitlyn sicker by the minute. We got the results of the MTX level at midnight last night and the doctor told us not to let Kaitlyn eat anything in the morning in case they decided to take her to the OR to get the line out. Well, sure enough, at 7am this morning, they informed us that they were going to finish giving Kaitlyn a blood transfusion (which started at 6am) and then she was going for surgery. What a great way to wake up, huh? Her transfusion ended at 9:30am and they wheeled her off for surgery at 10:30am. Her surgery was done by 11am.

They warned us that these infections can occur and that the central lines would need to be replaced. I guess it is quite common, but I never thought we would be facing this in the second month of her treatment. Katie was quiet and grumpy for most of the day, but she is up now playing, laughing and joking (at 8:30pm). She looks better than she has in the past few days. Her color is coming back and she seems to be feeling a bit better. This is not what I expected, but I am glad that the line was taken out and we can now focus on getting her better for the next phase of her treatment (which will be in 2& 1/2 weeks). God willing, we will only be in the hospital for another 48 hours. We will know more tomorrow when we speak with the Infectious Disease team.
